Industry iDIVE

Competition designed to provide students with the opportunity to perform a deep dive into an industry, learn about the global economy and markets, as well as gain exposure to basic investment concepts.

Students will step into the shoes of an investment deal team (2-6 students) of an opportunistic investment fund. The team is responsible for analyzing investment opportunities within an industry vertical and must prepare an Investment Memorandum to present to the investment committee. The team will focus on an industry and select one publicly listed company within it. The industry of focus and list of focus companies will be announced annually. This event will encourage students to contemplate, research, analyze, and learn about various industries. It is also an opportunity for students to be exposed to investment and business fundamental concepts. A Career Exploration component prompts the team to explore and reflect on jobs or career opportunities within an industry.

Investment Memorandum

The team of students will complete the following sections:

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

 

Summary which covers topics such as industry tailwinds, headwinds, regulation, disruptors, and general trends. 

COMPANY PROFILE

Summary about the company which covers topics such as product/services, key markets, and financial performance.

KEY PROFESSIONALS

Discussion about key professionals' backgrounds, team fit, strengths/weaknesses, turnover, and succession planning.

ANALYSIS

Analysis about key considerations including risks, areas for growth, new markets, product opportunities, competitors, comparables, valuation, and potential acquisition targets.

INVESTMENT PROPOSAL

Recommendation and justification to invest, pass, or short sell.

Career Exploration

Students will document their process in uncovering and exploring jobs or careers within the industry through the Career Process lens. The team will identify a job within the industry and complete an analysis through the seven steps of the Career Process. The team will research and learn about aspects of that career as well as the job requirements. Finally, students will assess whether they are interested in the career, whether their skills are a fit, and plan a path if they discover an interest.

Applying A Framework

Our Career Process is the starting point for the Career Exploration component. The team will apply each of the seven steps and return each step as necessary throughout the course of producing the output for this component. By approaching this component of the Industry iDIVE event through this lens, students will develop a better understanding of their own potential interest as well as what jobs within the industry entail.

Journey Of Discovery

Students will explore in depth about an industry, learn and apply fundamental investment concepts, as well as discover a range of career options; this will expand students understanding of business and apply lessons from the classroom to relevant real world examples.

 

Entries compete within the following Event Divisions:

Early ( 3 - 5 Grades )

Intermediate ( 6 - 8 Grades )

Advanced ( 9 - 12 Grades )
